Resident Evil Infinite Darkness is mostly a waste of time, but hardcore Resident Evil fans will still find some things to enjoy. While I wasn’t very impressed overall, I did enjoy spending time in this universe with these characters. I would also like to see more if they do a second season. Good animation, and a couple interesting action sequences save this from being a total waste.

The story centers mostly on series vet Leone Kennedy with Claire Redfield popping in here and there. There’s a government conspiracy and of course zombies are involved and of course things get a little weird as any story in this universe should. The minor focus on China within the narrative is interesting but doesn’t have any real weight which I’m totally fine with. I’m here for the zombies and when they do show up it’s entertaining.

My biggest gripe here would be the unfortunate lack of zombies. Over the four episodes available there are three action sequences that stick in my mind, and they are pretty cool in a Resident Evil sorta way. The rest is a lot of exposition and posturing by a mix of mostly dull characters. Even Leon and Claire here are kinda boring. The narrative is fairly broad which means there’s a lot of hopping from one location to the next and rarely is there a moment to just kind of be in the moment and the dread. We’re always on the next thing which is probably just another boring monologue about fear and terror blah blah blah. There’s good stuff here it’s just kind of buried and unfocused. Too grand for its own good.

I wanted to like Resident Evil Infinite Darkness and I’m glad I watched it, but I can’t recommend this to anyone but hardcore zombie or Resident Evil fans. And even them I’d hesitate to do so. I’m glad it exists, and I hope we get to see more but this could have been much better with a smaller scale narrative. Sadly, I cannot recommend Resident Evil Infinite Darkness unless you have a good idea of what you’re in for.
