Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is a fantastic adventure that carries weight for the entire series moving forward. The pacing is just a bit off in the first half but when things ramp up it doesn’t stop and will leave fans itching for more.

Mugen Train is a fairly simple setup but the train setting throughout makes for some really nice scenery. Those looking for classic Demon Slayer fights won’t be disappointed but there are some dream sequences that slow down proceedings just a bit for me. They serve as a cute detour into the minds of our protagonists which is fun but perhaps just a bit too long. Specifically we get to know a lot about a new demon slayer named Kyojuro who happens to be one of the strongest heroes the main characters have come across yet. He provides a great look at what the three leads may one day become if they’re not killed by demons first. Kyojuro is an incredible fighter and makes quick work of pretty much every obstacle they face, until the end. But seeing him move is a sight to see as they really show off his physicality and skill. All the characters get there moments as you would expect for an anime movie but in many ways this is Kyojuro’s movie. Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are there to survive and help as much as they can. And learn of course.

Overall this is a really enjoyable adventure but the last 30 to 45 minutes of this movie are pure anime fight goodness. The final fight between Kyojuro and the primary villain is magnificent. The soundtrack is blaring, the emotions are high, and the animation is a tornado of color, motion, and ferocity. They delivered the goods where they needed to most and all I wanted when the credits rolled was more Demon Slayer.

If you’re a Demon Slayer fan this is an essential part of the story as the end of the film has real implications for the characters moving forward. If you’re a newbie I don’t think there’s anything here preventing you from enjoying it. Even as a first time Demon Slayer experience this probably works and represents the series as a whole very well. I’m going to watch this movie many many times and I’d recommend it to just about anybody with a pulse. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train gets my highest recommendation.
